As academic coaches, we teach Executive Functioning Skills and Study Skills. We use the school context and learning environment to teach transferable skills that can be used throughout one's lifetime. A tutor works with a student to teach and review specific subject matter, and usually includes editing and corrections.
No. We are not subject matter tutors, however, we do assist students in finding available resources to increase comprehension of subject content.
Executive Functioning Skills are how we manage our time and resources. They include skills such as goal setting, organization, prioritization, time management, time estimation, task initiation and task completion.
Executive Functioning Skills are important to master as a student because they are transferable to adult life. We need good executive functioning to operate efficiently in the workplace, and manage our time, workflow and productivity. We need good executive functioning skills to manage our personal life, too.
All students can benefit from Academic Coaching. Our coaching maximizes student strengths while teaching skills to support areas of weakness. Some students need a great deal of support, and other need to refine the skills they already possess.
Yes! In addition to teaching Executive Functioning Skills and Study Skills, our coaches help students increase their attention and focus, and build academic stamina.time We also teach students how to identify, monitor, and minimize their distractions.
Yes! When a student is more confident at school, the student becomes less anxious. Our team helps students learn how to study, what to study, and how to successfully create a study plan to give the student the confidence needed to tackle assignments and exams. Our students also learn self advocacy skills, which help them take control of the areas that need support.
Our students range from middle school through college and graduate school.
No. All students can benefit from increasing their Executive Functioning and Study Skills. This includes students that do not have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or Section 504 Plan, as well as students who do receive these supports at school.
No, it is not too late! All students have strengths and areas that need support. Some areas of support simply need some refining. All students can benefit from strategies to "work smarter, not harder."
Yes! All appointments are held online. Time zones do not matter.; we see students all over the US and in Europe.
Each session is tailored to the individual needs of the student, so appointments are one-to-one, not in a group.
After the initial appointment, we generally meet with students two times per week, for 30 minutes or less per session; once at the beginning of the week, and once at the end of the week. As the student applies new skills independently, the sessions become less frequent.
Initial appointments may include parent(s), but once coaching sessions begin, they are held online between the student and the coach. Parent feedback and questions are welcomed at any time, and touch base meetings may be scheduled. There is generally more frequent contact with parents of middle- and high schoolers, than there is with parents of college students. At the beginning of the coaching relationship, the coach may provide feedback to the parent(s), but this responsibility is eventually handed off to the student.
Yes! Academic and Executive Functioning coaches improve family functioning by reducing tension within the household. The coach provides accountability for assignments, projects and study plans instead of the parent, thereby reducing the perception of "nagging" and frustration for all involved.
